American Studies at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg
American Studies Würzburg (AmWü) examines the United States within the broad frameworks of globally interconnected modernity. Thus, our research and teaching focus not only on literary genres and print media of the past and present. We further engage with screen storytelling from early film to contemporary streaming, visual and participatory cultures, national and transnational histories, and theoretical frameworks.
Areas of particular focus in Würzburg include ecological and ecocritical approaches; modernization and media studies; mobility, immigration, and transnational paradigms; critical race research; gender and queer theory.
We take pride in teaching that enlivens the seminar space, but also moves beyond traditional seminar formats. American Studies students are integrated into workshops, research, and creative projects in addition to interaction with international partners from their first semester on.
