In this lecture, Dr. Fagan will explore how in the first half of the nineteenth century African Americans read and responded to the most widespread and powerful medium of their day, the newspaper.
His investigation will focus on how Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs took up the issue of the news in their slave narratives, and situate these two canonical figures within the broader cultures of early African American reading and writing.
