The Division of English & American Studies at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg (JMU Würzburg) brings together four academic subdepartments -- American Studies, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Methodology, English Literature & Cultural Studies, and English Linguistics – in addition to English Language Practice.
Teaching in all departments is done primarily in English. Thus, we recommend proficiency levels of at least B1 or B2 (English Independent User – Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate English) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for all incoming students.

In our module system, each lecture, seminar, or practice course offers 5 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credit units.
We welcome exchange students in all academic courses. Please utilize the detailed course descriptions to match our offerings to requirements at your home university. Due to high demand for many courses, you may not be able to get into every class you wish to take during the official course registration period. In that case, we recommend that you contact the course instructor by email prior to the beginning of classes regarding your interest in participation.

In addition to academic courses, our department community offers many different opportunities to get involved and deepen your interaction with English-speaking cultures, languages, and literatures. We invite you to join us for various events such as academic talks and workshops organized by the subdepartments throughout the semester. Further, we hope that you will add your energy and creativity to projects such as the English Drama Group (EDG) and the arts and scholarship blog DenksportART.
