All Güt Things – The Texas German Story
06/18/2019Short documentary film screening with introductory talk by Dr. Marc Pierce and Matthias Warmuth, M.A. (Germanic Linguistics, The University of Texas at Austin). Dienstag, 18. Juni / 18:00-19:15 / ÜR 17
Texas German, a unique dialect developed in Central Texas, was once a thriving language with over 111,000 dominant speakers during its peak in the early 20th century. Today it is on the verge of extinction (language death). All Güt Things (2019) tells the story by looking at the past, present and future as seen through the eyes of the last generation of native speakers and those trying to save it.
Before the film screening, Dr. Pierce and M. Warmuth will provide a brief introduction to Texas German and talk about the work of the Texas German Dialect Project housed at the University of Texas.
