"Feminisms 2018" - Symposium. July 3rd, 2018. A Cooperation of American Studies & Siebold-Collegium Institute for Advanced Studies (SCIAS)
07/03/2018"Siri, what is feminism?" It was thanks to such queries that "feminism" advanced to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary's " Word of the Year 2017."
According to Merriam-Webster, the look-up rate for the term over the course of 2017 was 70% higher than in 2016. Spikes in interest could be correlated to reporting on events such as the Women's March and the first stirrings of #MeToo as well as the debut of films like Wonder Woman. Most fundamentally, however, the surge in inquiries suggests that feminism has emerged as a key, if not uncontroversial or easily defined, factor in current cultural dynamics.
This day-long symposium brings together established and emerging scholars to interrogate contemporary mobilizations of feminism, but also to explore the wider connections, implications, and varieties of feminist intervention.
Presentations and discussion will be in English.
The symposium is free and open to the public. For planning purposes, registration would be appreciated hiwi.amerikanistik@uni-wuerzburg.de
