Online Course: Ukrainian Poetic Resistance: From Empire to War

Lecturer: Dr. Bohdan Tokarskyi is a former URIS Fellow, a Senior Research Fellow at the European Times project (EUTIM) and Lecturer at the University of Potsdam, and former Affiliated Lecturer in Ukrainian Studies at the University of Cambridge.

This course will take place online and will be held in English, with some materials provided in German (questions in German are welcome too!) It is open to students at Swiss and German universities. Knowledge of Ukrainian is not required or expected for this course.

Time: 18:15–19:45 (CET) every Thursday. The start date: Thursday 28 April (until 28 July, 2022)

Roundtable: Science diplomacy in times of war

Four days after Russia launched a full-scale military invasion into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that the EU sanctions imposed on Russia as well as the wider political context would make the continuation of the ExoMars program—a joint ESA and Roscosmos (Russian federal space agency) space mission scheduled for September 2022—“very unlikely.” Was this a justified diplomatic proscription or a potential instance in which science diplomacy could operate in a time of war?

How should scientific institutions react to the war in Ukraine? Isolate Russia and exclude it from all scientific collaborations or “do business” as usual? The academic world is divided on this. In a roundtable organized by Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg on April 7, 6:30 p.m. CEST, historians and philosophers of science and technology together with key science administrators and academics will analyze the role of science diplomacy in times of war, historically and today. The discussion will be broadcasted via Zoom and Youtube. The event will be held in English, in cooperation with the EU-funded project InsSciDE– Inventing a Shared Science Diplomacy for Europe and the ERC Consolidator Grant research project HRP-IAEA.

Russia's War and Global Migration: (Un)Intended Consequences?

In Kooperation mit Ukraine Calling lädt das Institut für Europa-Studien (IFES) herzlich zur Online-Diskussion am Donnerstag, den 31. März 2022 um 13:30 Uhr ein.

In dieser vierten Ausgabe der Veranstaltungsreihe VOICES FROM UKRAINE diskutieren wir mit Hanna Vakhitova, Assistenzprofessorin und Ökonomin an der Kyiv School of Economics, über die Flüchtlingssituation inner- und außerhalb der Ukraine. Allerdings wird es nicht nur um Flucht aus der Ukraine gehen; der Krieg hat in Bezug für Flüchtlingsbewegungen eine weit größere Dimension: Da die Ukraine einer der größten Lieferanten für Agrarprodukte und Lebensmittel für die Länder des Nahen und Mittleren Ostens und Nordafrikas war, aber sowohl Agrarproduktion als auch Logistik durch den Krieg zerstört worden sind, ist mit schweren Versprgungskrisen und Preissteigerungen in diesen Ländern zu rechnen. Aufstände und weitere Migrationsbewegungen in Nordafrika und dem Nahen und Mittleren Osten sind vorhersehbar - inwiefern sind diese intendiert, und wie sollte Europa reagieren und sich vorbereiten?

VOICES FROM UKRAINE ist eine Veranstaltungsreihe des Viadrina Instituts für Europa-Studien und des Projekts Ukraine Calling an der Europa-Universität Viadrina. Wir präsentieren ukrainische Analsen und Perspektiven auf den Krieg. An der Viadrina eröffnen wir unseren ukrainischen Kolleg:innen eine Plattform, um gehört zu werden - in Deutschland und in Europa.
